Discription 1992 Ferrari 348 TB Challenge – RM Sothebys Auction Maranello

See more details and talk about the car here https://www.fchgt.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=830

– Previously owned by Ferrari SpA
– Retained by Ferrari for promotional use of the Challenge series

Rather than finding its way to the racetrack in the hands of a privateer within the Challenge series, chassis number 94984 was retained by Ferrari until 1997. It remained in their use as it functioned as essentially the press car for the Challenge series, used to help market the series (and the car itself) to members of the media and any interested clients that would drop by the factory. Interestingly enough, the car can still be seen today on Ferrari’s own website, under the page for the 348 Challenge, and the vehicle retains its original Modena registration plates.

The car’s history with Ferrari is confirmed by not only its accompanying Estratto Cronologico, but also the car’s warranty manual, where Ferrari SpA is clearly listed as the first owner. The 348 Challenge cars are perhaps the most interesting and significant model of the 348 family and represent an important piece of Ferrari history as the very first Challenge car and the first of a great line of Challenge series models. This example, currently with an owner in Monaco after having spent its whole life in Italy, has a particularly fascinating story.

NO RESERVE!

Make no mistake, this needs a LOT of work. One of circa just 18 RHD 355 Challenge delivered to the UK, this was delivered in 1996 and was driven with success by Ian Khan in the UK and European Championships, according to information found online it finished 5th overall in the Western Europe Ferrari Challenge which is no mean feat.

Anyway, with its best days clearly behind it the car somehow found its way to South Africa which is where we purchased it from. It was street registered there (papers accompany the car) so it is assumed the same should be possible in the UK where a number of others have already achieved street registration also.

Today the car can only be regarded as a restoration project, our list of observations should be regarded as not limiting the extent of what is wrong/ missing with the car and only as an opinion. Inspection is quick frankly essential in our opinion and anybody who bids without satisfying themselves prior to purchase shall have no recourse – this is a 10 day listing and inspection is easy to arrange by appointment. We have the car in a professional storage facility that requires just 24 hours notice so please please come and take a look.

Observations regarding the car that we would like to make any potential party aware of;

– the engine is not the original and is of a later (355) type
– several panels are fibreglass; doors (no side windows also), bonnet, engine cover, front wings, front bumper
– no ECU, partial loom in situ
– modified dashboard
– no seats/ interior
– no front floor panel
– Perspex 3/4 and rear windows
– no pop up lights

This list is limited, this car is NOT in good condition. it does though retain the original (F40 LM type) brakes, wheels and what we assume to be correct anti-roll bars and shocks.

All considered though this does give the buyer the chance to buy a genuine right hand drive 355 Challenge at a fraction of what they are considered to be worth right now (circa £150k), this is a long way (money and time) off being comparable but the car should be a welcome addition to the various relevant series’ that are starting to incorporate these modern classic race cars.

Any questions please email info@markdonaldson.com and we can also send a full set of images.
