P.O.A

Michelotto Automobili developed the F430 GT2 with a view to making it eligible for all the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO) series. The F430 GT2 were entered in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS), the Le Mans Series (LMS), the FIA GT Championship and, of course, the Le Mans 24 Hours. Michelotto worked directly with Ferrari Corse Clienti. From the outset, the F430 was guided by an official desire to enter Grand Touring. This had not been the case with the 360 Modena, which was initially developed by Jean-Michel Bourresche’s team (JMB) before receiving a helping hand from Maranello.

Work on the F430 base began at the end of 2004, with the first runs in October 2005. Development was accelerated, but nothing was left to chance. The F430’s original aluminium chassis was reinforced with an aluminium tubular trellis cage in the cockpit. Mechanically, the engine displacement was reduced to 3,996 cm’ to make the car compatible with the GT2 category (allowing engines with displacements of 3.8 to 4.0 litres). The berlinetta was fitted with two silencers on the exhaust manifolds to limit noise. At the same time, the F430 gained weight – around 50 kg – to reach 1,130 kg on the scales. Power, managed by means of flanges placed on the intake pipes in accordance with the regulations, fluctuated according to the championship from 430 to 470 bhp, available from 6,600 to 7,500 rpm.

In terms of aerodynamics, the underbody of the car was completely flat. To generate downforce, in addition to the excellent base provided by the F430, there was of course a rear wing with a wide range of adjustment options. The race versions of the F430 were fitted with lightweight 18-inch centre-nut wheels with Michelin slicks instead of the 19-inch wheels fitted with Pirelli tyres on the road cars. While the F430 road car’s adjustable dampers could be adjusted using a knob on the steering wheel, the F430 GT2’s suspension was not adjustable on the fly.

The F430 GT2 got off to a strong start by winning the FIA GT2 Manufacturers’ Cup and Drivers’ title in 2006 and 2007, the ALMS GT2 Manufacturers’ Title in 2007, and it won the GT2 class at Le Mans in 2008. Ultimately, the F430 GT2 made Ferrari a dominant force in GT racing, and this has continued with the 458 GTE and 488 GTE. Including the 430 GT2 prototype, it is believed that approximately 53 examples were built in total.
This particular example was campaigned by JMB Racing (MC) throughout the 2006 FIA GT Championship and was driven by Iradj Alexander and Tim Sugden. JMB Racing also ran the car in the 2006 24 Hours of Spa where it was shared by Iradj Alexander, Tim Sugden, Jean-Michel Martin and Stéphane Daoudi.

The car is fresh from a full rebuild at Michelotto in Italy and all mechanical components are at zero hours including the engine & gearbox. The car is ready to race and is eligible for a significant number of events including Global Endurance Legends and Masters Endurance Legends, in which it can tackle some of the most historically significant circuits in Europe, such as Le Mans, Paul Ricard, Silverstone, Spa-Francorchamps, and Nürburgring. Moreso than any other modern manufacturer, Ferrari has taken a unique approach in bringing their clients further into their family by shepherding them on the transition from road to track, and the Ferrari Challenge program has been a key part of this process. Created by Ferrari in 1993, starting with the 348 Challenge, this single-marque series initially saw competition in Europe but has now expanded to four official series in Europe, North America, Japan, and the United Kingdom. What better way was there for an enthusiastic Ferrari owner to go racing, all with factory-backed support?

By the time that the 360 Challenge was introduced in 2000, the Ferrari Challenge program was hitting its stride and growing in leaps and bounds. However, unlike previous Challenge cars, the 360 could not be built up by a dealer with an upgrade package; all 360 Challenges were purpose-built by the factory from new, taking things one step further for both Ferrari and its clients.

Delivered in 2004, chassis number 136235 was the ninth-to-last 360 Challenge built by Ferrari. It made its debut in the Ferrari Challenge Series at Spa during the same year. From 2006-2011, the car was campaigned regularly in the Danish and Swedish editions of the series and was driven to podium finishes on three occasions.

In its current custodianship, the car was wrapped in blue and white during the summer of 2022 and has continued to be campaigned on track days throughout continental Europe. This includes the Ferrari Challenge & GT Days at the Red Bull Ring in Austria in both 2022 and 2023. The car competed in two events within the Cavallino Classic Cup, first at the Red Bull Ring in June of 2022, where it finished 3rd Overall and 1st in Class, then later that year in the Cavallino Classic Cup at Misano in October 2022, finishing 1st in Class and 2nd Overall. Following these outings, the car has been driven just under 7,420 km from new.

To support its recent running, the 360 Challenge has been serviced and looked after accordingly to keep it running at the front of the pack. Over €20,000 was spent in July of 2023 in servicing the car with the Ferrari specialists at Toni Auto in Maranello, including a belt service, replacing the rear brake discs, a full fluid flush, and reupholstering the driver’s seat in correct Sabelt fabric. In April of this year, four new Pirelli racing slicks were fitted. The car has recently been granted Ferrari Classiche certification, confirming that it is still fitted with its original engine and gearbox. Additionally, a package of spare parts can be acquired by the purchase via separate negotiation. Please contact a member of the RM Sotheby’s Private Sales team for further details.

Nearly twenty years after its retirement from the Ferrari Challenge program, 360 Challenges still remain highly desirable for track-day use and represent serious value for money. Stripped down to the bare essentials, a 360 Challenge is far faster than its road-going siblings, over half a second faster to 100 km/h from a standstill than a 360 Modena F1. Thus, this would be an excellent acquisition for someone looking for the track-day thrills that only a Ferrari can provide.
