Despite its race-ready appearance, Ferrari never intended the F40 to be used in competition, but that didn’t stop owners from petitioning the company to build a racing version. Eventually, Ferrari relented and comissioned racing firm Michelotto to create the F40 LM. Only 19 were built for use in IMSA, the Japanese Grand Touring Championship, and later, the BPR Global GT Championship.

With nearly 500-heavily-turbocharged horsepower, the F40 was a tricky car to handle even in base form, but Michelotto cranked up the boost for the LM. RM Sotheby’s says that an F40 LM it recently sold at auction produced around 720 hp. That’s quite a lot in a car with no driver aids to speak of, and a traditional H-pattern gearbox. At Goodwood, owner Chris Nelson maintains great control of his F40 LM, but it looks like he’s working hard.

The F40 LM had some success in European sports car racing, winning two races and getting podiums in a handful of others. It’s probably not Ferrari’s most decorated race car, but it’s easily one of the coolest.
