The FIA GT Championship is an endurance motorsport championship run by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile and promoted by the Stéphane Ratel Organisation. The series is for Grand Touring sports cars, developed for the road and adapted for the circuit. The cars take part in races between two and 24 hours in duration, with two or three drivers sharing the car. The FIA GT Championship is in its 12th season in 2008. The two main categories in the series are for GT1 and GT2 cars. GT1 cars can be more heavily developed and produce between 600 and 650bhp, the GT2 cars have to remain closer to the production models and produce around 450bhp.
The Ferrari F430 replaced the 360 and was launched at the 2004 Paris Motor Show. The body was redesigned to be more curvaceous and aerodynamic, and downforce was greatly increased. The large oval openings in the front bumper were reminiscent of the Ferrari 156 “Sharknose” Formula 1 car and 250 TR 61 Le Mans car of the sixties.
The F430 GT2 is based on the road car and is designed to compete in international GT2 class competition such as the American Le Mans Series, Le Mans Series and FIA GT Championship. F430 GT2s also compete at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. They are the fastest and most developed racing versions of the F430.
The AF Corse Motorola team have competed in GT2 for two years and won the championship in both seasons. In 2007 the team’s drivers were Dirk Müller, Toni Vilander, Stéphane Ortelli, Gianmaria Bruni and Mika Salo.
With Müller paired with Vilander, the season opener at Zhuhai in China could not have been better. Driving the car presented here, Ferrari 430 GT2, chassis number F131EVOGT2462, the drivers qualified first and won the race. Müller said, “It’s a really good start to the season. Pole position yesterday, fastest in my stint and the victory – it couldn’t really be better.” The next round at Silverstone produced another win although the car only qualified in sixth place. Another first place at Bucharest made it a fantastic three in a row for the team. AF Corse Motorola scored a fourth consecutive win at Monza but it was the sister car taking the chequered flag this time, with this car finishing second from second on the grid.
At Ochersleben in Germany, Müller and Vilander finished fourth, strengthening their championship lead even further. At the Spa 24 Hours Müller and Vilander were joined by ex-Formula 1 ace Mika Salo. Unfortunately, the car did not finish despite the valiant efforts of the team mechanics, but at Adria they were back to their winning ways. Starting from the back of the grid after losing their qualifying times, the drivers stormed through the whole field to win. Bruni netted yet another victory, while at Nogaro in France a fuel pump failure put the car out of the race.
A three-way battle for the Championship would be fought out at the final round at Zolder. Müller and Vilander qualified on pole and romped to an easy victory – the Championship was theirs. Müller said, “The victory came just after the start because I already had a three second gap and when I looked behind, my mirror was empty, something must have happened. From that point on it was good, I was able to control the pace, and I didn’t push too much to protect the tyres. Everything was running well, the car was performing well and thanks to AF Corse for giving Toni and I a very good car. Winning this championship means a lot to me, to Toni and to the team. For me it is a long time since I have won a championship and it feels really good.”
Toni Villander added, “After the disappointment in Nogaro I couldn’t really relax. Mentally it was quite difficult, the championship was in our hands and we needed to be quick but at the same time to avoid mistakes. These six wins have been the highlight of my year and I’m really happy to leave here as champion.” The Team Championship was won by AF Corsa Motorola, with an incredible nine out of ten wins in the 2007 season. Ferrari also won the GT2 Manufacturers’ Cup making a clean sweep of all the GT championships of 2007.
The car presented here is the 2007 race-winning, championship-dominating Ferrari F430 GT2. In the right hands, this car is ready to add to its glorious race history in 2008.
